PRESIDENT DODON NOT GOING TO BACK DEMOCRATS' EURO-INTEGRATION AMENDMENT

10 octomber, 2018

Moldovan President Igor Dodon will not support the ruling Democratic Party's initiative on fixing the Euro-integration initiative in the Constitution as the nation's strategic development objective.

Commenting on the Democrats' initiative, the head of state wrote on his Facebook page today: "Neither the parliamentary Socialist faction nor me as President of Moldova shall support the Democrats' legislative initiative on introducing such an amendment in the Main Law. I believe it is not correct to fix the ideological outlooks of a political party in the Constitution of the country".

In this connection, Igor Dodon expressed bewilderment about the Democratic Party's recent declaring "a pro-Moldova course" and itself - a pro-Moldova party.

"What kind of an approach is it - pro-Moldova? Apparently, the Democratic Party has not yet decided for itself which political convictions to choose between, so it wants to saddle simultaneously two political ideas, having no confidence about either of them. I believe such an amendment of the Constitution will only upset the fragile political balance in the society. Moldova has already been split along the lines of differing geopolitical vectors and country development concepts, therefore such disputes have to be settled through elections or referenda, when the people will decide themselves their country's vector of integration and development", wrote Igor Dodon.

"The soon-to-be parliamentary election will demonstrate clearly what and whom Moldova citizens actually want. And we should not start re-writing the Constitution now, in haste, without a public accord and practically before the expiry of the initiators' political mandate", wrote the President.
