MOLDOVA AGAIN DEMANDS RUSSIAN TROOP WITHDRAWAL AND TRANSFORMATION OF PEACEKEEPING OPERATION

07 december, 2018

The Republic of Moldova consistently stands up for a complete and unconditional removal of Russian troops from its territory and for transformation of the continuing [since 1992] peacekeeping operation into a civilian mission under an international mandate, Moldova's Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Tudor Ulianovschi stated on Thursday at the Annual Meeting of OSCE Foreign Ministers held in Milan (Italy).

Ulianovschi said that such steps, in a combination with ongoing confidence-building measures, would promote approximation of the residents of the two Dniester River banks and creation of a favorable atmosphere for achieving a lasting settlement of the Transnistrian conflict.

The Minister reminded about the recent Resolution named "On a Complete and Unconditional Withdrawal of Foreign Military Forces from the Territory of the Republic of Moldova" adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and about the serious danger for the people and environment of the huge arsenals of Russian ammunition stored at the military warehouses in the Kolbasna Village in Transnistria.

He thanked all the 57 OSCE Member Countries for their support at adopting the Declaration on the 5+2 negotiation process, in which the signatories expressed their firm determination to promote the working out of a peaceful, all-embracing and sustainable settlement of the conflict with respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally recognized borders and with providing a special legal status to the Republic's Transnistrian region.

Tudor Ulianovschi stressed the need for making more active efforts to settle protracted conflicts in all the GUAM Countries [Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova] with strict observance of the territorial integrity of these states within their internationally recognized borders.

"The recent Russia-Ukraine navy incident in the Strait of Kerch was an extra demonstration of how fragile the peace and security are in this region of the world where my native country is situated, too", said the Minister.
