DEMOCRATS SAY THEIR POST-ELECTION COALITION IS THEORETICALLY POSSIBLE ONLY WITH ACUM

13 december, 2018

The ruling Democratic Party of Moldova admits the possibility to form a post-election coalition only with deputies from the voting bloc ACUM [uniting two Right-wing opposition organizations - the DA Platform and the Party of Action and Solidarity, PAS]

The Moldovan Parliament Speaker, Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party Andrian Candu stated at a news conference on Wednesday evening that ACUM is the only political formation that has the same objective with the Democrats - European integration.

"I can't really see how we could form a coalition, say, with the Party of Socialists (PSRM) because we have totally differing opinions about what is better for the country", said Candu.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the DA Platform and the PAS stated repeatedly that they would never enter into a coalition with the Democratic Party. Besides this, the leaders constantly maintain that the Democrats and Socialists have agreed to form a governing majority after the February 24 election.

Moldova President Igor Dodon, the de-facto PSRM leader, stated repeatedly that the Party of Socialists is firmly intending to win a majority of mandates in the would-be new Parliament, but is considering the possibility to attract some independent candidates into the future parliamentary majority. The Socialists are categorically dismissing whatever possibility of forming a coalition with any other parties. Last Tuesday, President Igor Dodon stated once again that if the formation of a coalition becomes inevitable for creating a majority, then the PSRM will start demanding a snap parliamentary election.
