POLICE READY TO FULFILL THEIR FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES IN ELECTION PERIOD - MINISTER

18 december, 2018

Minister of the Interior Alexander Jizdan stated that in election period the police will be acting in strict accordance with the law and fulfill its main task - to ensure public order, polling stations security.

Speaking in a live program "Friday with Anatol Golea" on the RTR Moldova channel [the Moldovan subsidiary of Russia's second-largest television and radio corporation] he said that the police is also ready to ensure the security of parliamentary candidates if need be.

At the same time, the MoI head refuted the statements of PAS leader Maia Sandu who said that the police would be watching her during the election campaign. Before, Sandu published in social networks a video with two police officers in civilian clothes, who were following her during her meetings with electors.

"This is a cheap propaganda, nobody is following Maia Sandu. Yes, these were police officers engaged in combating crime, they just happened to be nearby. I agree that the officers reacted wrongly. They are novices, just graduated from the Police Academy. They got confused and failed to answer questions", Jizdan said.

He proposed to politicians to address to the MoI, whose leadership is ready to cooperate with all police forces.

Minister also refuted journalists' statements that the police provides protection of the Democratic Party building and prohibits to park cars at the nearby streets. He explained the permanent presence of Patrol Police team near the DP office by the fact that the MoI office is located in the neighborhood.

Answering questions, the MoI head disagreed that there are too many police patrol vehicles in the Chisinau streets and country roads.

"This is untrue. Citizens want even more police, as this ensures lowering of violations and general level of corruption. It would be better to spend funds for preventing violations, than for investigating crimes. We want to raise the number of patrol vehicles 5-fold, each police station should have a patrol vehicle", the minister said.

He added that gradually, police officers should be replaced with technical means, as it is done in other countries.

"In other countries the police is replaced by other means - radars, cameras, other devices. Currently, in Chisinau there are cameras on more than 40 intersections, though no camera is working on national roads. Now we have a project that implies the installing of 730-740 cameras, which will be monitoring the traffic on national roads. So far, there is no money for implementing this project, but we are considering the possibility of a public-private partnership", Jizdan said.
