PRESIDENT IGOR DODON ASSESSES SNAP ELECTION PROBABILITY ALREADY AT 60%

10 april, 2019

Moldova President Igor Dodon is assessing the probability of an early parliamentary election at “minimum 60%”.

The head of state said on the local television on Tuesday night: “Yes, now it is not less than 60%, though a week ago I said fifty-fifty. And, still, I guess the new incumbent Parliament is not completely lost yet, and as the deadline is approaching, when the President will be able to dissolve this legislature and appoint an early election, parliamentary factions will be getting more tractable”.

Dodon voiced conviction that as president he has done everything to gather the three main parliamentary parties to dialog and that the Socialists did everything correctly: they sustained a pause, after which namely last Tuesday they put forward their conditions for forming a governing coalition.

“These conditions are not for the ACUM bloc or Democratic Party – this is what voters actually want. I doubt very much that a coalition will be formed. With such thoughts in mind, we can confidently go for an early election, for we know that those 400 thousand Moldova citizens, who voted for the Party of Socialists last February 24, do not wish Vlad Plahotniuc and his Democratic Party to remain in power. But they don’t want us to bring Right-wing nationalists to power, either”, said the President.

Igor Dodon stated during the live program that he was disappointed with the position of the Right and the Democratic Party, so their agreement to enter into a coalition with the Socialists is unlikely.

“Honestly speaking, I don’t think the Party of Socialists will enter into a coalition with anybody. Judging by the developments of last few days, I am arriving at a conclusion that coalition chances are standing next to zero. What talks can we hold in a situation when we offer concrete, constructive proposals for negotiations, but the other side switches on its ‘Facebook fakes’. What for should we need all this? Then, let’s go for a snap election, and we will see”, said Igor Dodon.
