IN CASE OF SNAP ELECTION, DP WILL WIN MORE PARLIAMENTARY MANDATES THAN NOW, SAYS PAVEL FILIP

12 april, 2019

The Democratic Party of Moldova is against an early parliamentary election, but is ready to any variant, and should such polls be really held, the Democrats will receive even more parliamentary mandates than what they won on February 24, the Chairman of the parliamentary Democratic faction, Prime Minister of Moldova Pavel Filip, stated in an interview with the Tribuna portal.

Filip expressed confidence that if a decision is taken to hold a snap election, “it must be held with an account of how Moldova citizens had voted at the consultative referendum on February 24, i.e. we should be electing already 61 MPs to the would-be Parliament and not 101 as now”.

“The refusal to hold negotiations on forming a governing coalition is demonstrating that the parties concerned are simply afraid of shouldering responsibility because they feel they are not able to govern the country. But this means also something else: a deceit of citizens’ expectations. Citizens have fulfilled their civil duty – they have voted. Now it is parties’ turn to fulfill their duty namely to start resolving the country’s problems, and not to create new ones. Citizens usually punish for such a destructive behavior”, said Pavel Filip.

Concerning the possible formation of a governing coalition, Filip stated that “a coalition should be formed proceeding from citizens’ interests and needs, and not from political parties’ positions, and not for hunting for high public posts”.

“The best coalition is the one that will be solving the people’s problems – without scandals, arrogance or hidden agendas. It is essential to find common grounds for the people’s good and to freeze the questions that can be causing discords. Independently of our political preferences, which the DP has announced, we want to form a coalition that would be able to achieve best results for citizens’ good. This means that such coalition must have possibilities to implement our electoral pledges, including the social measures, which we presented a few days ago in our package of social bills for Moldova. We thus want a coalition that would be interested in resolving social problems and that would be functioning well”, stressed the DP Deputy Chairman.

Pavel Filip believes that avoiding of discussions and refusal to enter into coalition negotiations “is something that brings no use – absolutely. The first condition for forming a governing coalition is to talk. I repeat: those who turn down a political dialog are thus acting against citizens of Moldova. To put it perfectly straight, I should say that those who promote a ‘dialog of the deaf’, pursuing their concealed selfish interests, are doing an extreme harm to Moldova citizens’ interests. I am convinced, however, that there are decisions, and they have to be put into life”, stressed Pavel Filip.

Infotag's dossier: The reduce the Moldovan Parliament’s strength [to 61 MPs], it is necessary to introduce amendments to Article 60 of the Constitution, which currently reads that the Moldovan Parliament consists of 101 deputies. Section VI of the Constitution stipulates a strict procedure of amending the Main Law. The Parliament may approve a Constitution amendment law only by minimum two-thirds of the deputies’ votes [i.e. 67 MPs] and not earlier than in 6 months after the Constitutional Court has given its positive conclusion on the bill concerned. At the moment, there are no bills on amending the Constitution registered with the Parliament Secretariat.
