ACUM POLITICAL COUNCIL TO DISCUSS SOCIALISTS’ PROPOSALS ON COALITION FORMING

16 april, 2019

The Political Council of the voting bloc ACUM will discuss on Tuesday the proposals made by the Party of Socialists [PSRM] on forming a governing coalition. Assembly time will be announced later on, ACUM MP Radu Marian said to journalists today.

Marian reminded that ACUM stands for resuming the new Parliament’s first plenary meeting that began yet on March 21 but was suspended due to the legislature’s incapacity to pass decisions or elect the forum’s leadership or working bodies.

Socialist MP Eduard Smirnov, who chaired the suspended plenary meeting as the forum’s oldest-age deputy, stated that he had taken notice of the ACUM’s demand to resume the plenary work. He said a resumption decision will be taken upon an agreement by parliamentary factions.

“We should wait a little more time, perhaps a day or two. May be some meetings will take place, and coalition-forming attempts may be made. Parliamentary factions may express wish to continue the plenary meeting. I presume we have real chances for continuing the suspended plenary sitting already this week”, said the parliamentarian.

As was already reported by Infotag, last Friday the PSRM All-Republican Council put forward a number of pre-conditions for forming a governing coalition with the ACUM bloc. For this, the Socialists proposed to appoint PSRM Chairperson Zinaida Greceanii to the Parliament Speaker’s post. The Socialists are ready to delegate to the would-be Government their representatives for ministers of foreign affairs, defense, the Interior, and country reintegration. The PSRM is also insisting on returning to the presidential plenary powers as before October 1, 2016 and on adopting a number of laws. The PSRM has put forward three blocks of draft laws, which the Socialists believe ought to be approved to improve the situation in the country. These bills are broadly divisible into “Priority Package of Laws”, the “Consolidation of State institutions”, and the “Division of Responsibility in the Process of Governance”. The Socialists are insisting on forming an official coalition, on a joint approval of government, and are refusing to support the minority government of the ACUM bloc.
