MOLDOVA MAY AVOID SNAP ELECTION – DEMOCRATS

17 may, 2019

Moldova still has a possibility to avoid an early parliamentary election, though chances for this are thinning, says Democratic Party Press Secretary Vitalie Gamurari.

He said on the local television on Thursday night that he is on the whole optimistic about the near future and still hopes that the political parties concerned will demonstrate their political maturity “when salvation of the country is at stake”.

“I hate the very thought of Moldova’s possible remaining without parliament for nearly a year. This would be a total chaos. In such conditions, the Government will certainly continue working but will be restricted in its freedom of action and will have to act without the legislative power’s support. Also, Moldova will not be able to fully carry out its international commitments, including the agenda of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement. And the European Union’s first political response in such situation may concern the visa-free regime for Moldova”, presumes the Democrat.

Vitalie Gamurari named as “logical” the Constitutional Court’s judgment that the President of Moldova is not eligible to nominate a candidate for prime minister in the absence of governing bodies in parliament.

“The Constitutional Court tackled the question from the viewpoint of the efficiency and functionality of the State and parliament. Until there is no leadership in the new Parliament, one cannot speak of forming a new Government because it will have no parliamentary support. And from the legal point of view, the Court has clarified the stages of the formation of power bodies in Moldova”, said the DP press secretary.
