TRAIAN BASESCU SAYS THAT MOLDOVAN PARLIAMENTARY PARTIES SHOULD REACH ACCORD AT LAST

21 may, 2019

The Republic of Moldova’s parliamentary forces [the Democratic Party, Party of Socialists, political bloc ACUM and Ilan Shor Party] must reach an accord at last on forming a parliamentary coalition and appointing a government, believes ex-President of Romania Traian Basescu.

Speaking at a news conference held in Chisinau on Monday, Basescu remarked that besides their own interests, the parties have also their fundamental duties constituting the purpose of their very existence – to give a government to the country.

“The parties that cannot fulfill this duty in time, irrespective of circumstances, have nothing to do with national interests. They do not wish to fulfill their duty to the country and are simply playing on voters’ nerves”, said the Romanian politician.

He recommended all deputies to go to a sauna, undress, have a good wash, and come out with news that they have agreed upon forming a government.

Basescu called as unacceptable the numerous statements by politicians concerning a snap election “because this will not change results, and because parties playing with early elections usually lose their popularity ratings”.

“An early election with the same [mixed-election] system will not change anything. I cannot see how one more election may lead to substantial changes here. But in such case Moldova may suffer due to suspension of external funding, including by the European Union. That’s why the parliamentary factions ought to focus on forming a government”, reiterated Traian Basescu.

Basescu remarked that if he were in Moldova citizens’ shoes, he would come out for protesting.

“No, I am not calling to a revolt, but it is necessary to express discontent to the parties that are not fulfilling their duties before citizens and would not form a government”, said the Romanian ex-president.
