CONFRONTATION BETWEEN PSRM AND ACUM IS INEVITABLE, AND THE RIGHT BLOC WILL WIN – SERGIU NAZARIA

12 june, 2019

Chairman of the Moldovan Association of Historians and Political Scientists, Professor of Moldovan State Institution of International Relations Dr. Sergiu Nazaria has offered the following forecast: after a joint victory over the Democratic Party, a confrontation will inevitably emerge between the right-wing political bloc ACUM and the Party of Socialists.

Nazaria wrote in his article headlined “Life after Plahotniuc: What Will Diarchy in Moldova End With?” published on the website of the Transnistrian subdivision of the Russian Institute of Strategic Researches (RISI), that a reason of the events taking place in Moldova presently stems from the Moldovan courts’ disrespect for the population and in the absence of an independent judiciary system in Moldova. In his opinion, there are indeed questions from the juridical point of view, “but from the political one, everything was done correctly, in the interests of an overwhelming majority of the population, because everybody in Moldova has been sick and tired of the absolutely unprincipled Vlad Plahotniuc”.

“The Moldovan society has accepted this scenario politically and morally – the scenario of overthrowing Plahotniuc. The new power has been recognized in principle by all of the world’s main stakeholders – Russia, the European Union, the United States as well as some individual European countries. The stances of the geopolitical centers have coincided because Plahotniuc has bored everybody to death not only in Moldova but also outside it. He discredits everything he only touches”, believes Sergiu Nazaria.

“As a result, there appeared a temporary balance of forces, a diarchy when in reality Moldovan state institutions are steered by the Democratic Party and Plahotniuc, but a majority of the Moldovan society and the world community supports the new power.

“Neither side is able to win over the other side. Plahotniuc disposes of resources, but he is apprehending Washington’s negative reaction, so he is not using force. Besides this, I presume a split has taken place inside the Plahotniuc clique: his surrounding, first and foremost his security forces, are refusing to fulfill his orders on a forcible suppression of the new power and on arresting its representatives. The security guys are afraid of possible consequences for themselves. That’s exactly why the DP leader is not able to suppress the new state power – and will never be able”, maintains the article author.

Sergiu Nazaria believes that the crisis will be overcome in nearest days – overcome as follows: “Key figures in the Plahotniuc surrounding will get united, detain him and hand him over to the new authorities in exchange for sound guarantees of security for themselves. Such things happened in the world history dozens of times”.

After that, however, an irreconcilable conflict will inevitably break out between ACUM and the Party of Socialists.

“In that future conflict, the ACUM bloc will have all arguments, prerequisites and levers for a victory. I think the Right have already won. That happened last Saturday [June 8], when the Socialists gave to ACUM in fact the whole Government – the Premier’s post, the Ministry of the Interior, financial and economic ministries. In a word, both force and finance”, wrote the political scientist.

Sergiu Nazaria presumes that eventually the Party of Socialists may be outlawed and prohibited because its informal [and de-facto] leader, President Igor Dodon, had the imprudence to confess that he had used to receive funding from abroad [which is prohibited by the Moldovan legislation].

“This may serve as a ground for accusing Dodon of a high treason and for outlawing the Party of Socialists. In a struggle between the PSRM and ACUM, the pro-European political bloc will definitely win. The Party of Socialists will be crushed down and prohibited. And parliamentarians from the Democratic Party (DP will vanish as a legal entity, but the parliamentary DP faction will remain) will accede to ACUM. I believe all this may happen already in a few months”, said Sergiu Nazaria.
