PACE CO-RAPPORTEURS CONCERNED ABOUT SITUATION IN MOLDOVA

The co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for the monitoring of the Republic of Moldova, Egidijus Vareikis (Lithuania, EPP/CD) and Maryvonne Blondin (France, SOC), have expressed their deep concern about the on-going situation in the country.

The co-rapporteurs said that for three days, the country has been plunged into a state of legal and political confusion as a result of the Constitutional Court’s interpretation of the deadline for the creation of a government and the dissolution of parliament, “while a political agreement was being reached, thus leading to the formation of a ruling coalition and a fully-operational government”.

“We will await the release of an urgent opinion by the Venice Commission on the legal aspects of these latest decisions. In the meantime, we urge all political forces to show restraint and to respect democratic principles and the will of the people. Political leaders have a responsibility to ensure that state institutions act in the interest of the Moldovan people and do not hamper the good functioning of democratic institutions,” added the PACE co-rapporteurs.

According to them, the Monitoring Committee will closely follow the situation and take action as needed.
