EX-SPEAKER ANDRIAN CANDU FLIES TO WASHINGTON

13 june, 2019

The First Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova, Speaker of the previous Parliament Andrian Candu flew to Washington DC on Wednesday.

The Democratic Party has not reported anything about this voyage. On the eve of it, Candu participated in a live television program, in which not a word was said about the forthcoming travel.

In Chisinau, where two governments are continuing to exist side by side and where a diarchy would not come to an end, many interested forces are looking forward to hearing the United States’ reaction that may become crucial. The European Union, many EU member countries and Russia have synonymously supported the new Moldovan Government of Prime Minister Maya Sandu. But the American side was more restrained.

The U.S. Department of State wrote last Monday that the will of the Moldovan people as expressed in the February 2019 elections must be respected without interference. The document said the United States calls on all Moldovan parties to show restraint and to agree on a path forward through political dialog.

“The February 24 parliamentary elections were competitive and respected fundamental rights. The will of the Moldovan people as expressed in those elections must be respected without interference”, said the statement. Its authors stressed that ensuring a prosperous and democratic future for Moldova and its citizens “is a shared goal the United States will continue to support”.

Last several days, the United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Moldova, Dereck Hogan, spent in Washington. On June 12 he returned to Chisinau and held meetings with President Igor Dodon and the heads of new power bodies – Parliament Speaker Zinaida Greceanii and Prime Minister Maya Sandu. But the U.S. Embassy did not report any details of those conversations. And it is not known if Ambassador Hogan met the still functioning prime minister Pavel Filip or Moldovan Democratic Party leader Vlad Plahotniuc.

After Dereck Hogan’s meeting with the new Parliament and Government leaderships, the just appointed new Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicolae Popescu, signed an order on calling Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Moldova to the United States, Cristina Balan, home “for consultations”. She was asked to arrive in Chisinau by not later than June 14.

Popescu stated to journalists that he had duly informed the USA authorities about his decision and its reasons, and stressed that “since this moment, any address to be made by Ambassador Cristina Balan shall not represent the position of the Republic of Moldova’s legitimate authorities”.
