PRESIDENT DODON STATES THAT PERSONAL SANCTIONS MAY BE SLAPPED AGAINST DP LEADERS AND MINISTERS

13 june, 2019

Moldova President Igor Dodon stated on the Moldova-1 public television channel on Wednesday night that personal sanctions may be applied against Democratic Party leaders and members of the previous Government.

Dodon said this is one of several possible variants of overcoming the current political crisis. In his opinion, there may be three such variants.

“First: a peaceful transfer of power by the Democratic Party over to a new government. This is a normal process. The Democrats had stayed in power quite long. Now they should remove their tents [set up near all ministries], send home the people – the so-called ‘popular guards’, whom the DP hired for blocking state institutions round the clock, and should hand over the power in a quiet and civilized manner. After this, the DP deputies must come to parliament and start working – already as the opposition who have the right to criticize the power”, said Igor Dodon.

He explained that the second variant is related to external pressing. Dodon underlined that the new Moldovan authorities have been recognized by the European Union, the United States, Russia, other countries and various international organizations.

“On this question, all our partners have a full consensus. They have already started and will be further exerting pressure for realization of the first scenario – a peaceful transfer of power. I support this variant, which is the best for all. Should this not happen, the external pressure will be growing and then I believe personal sanctions may be applied. Some DP leaders and government members may be included into a sanction list and will not be able to leave Moldova”, said Igor Dodon.

“And the third way of overcoming the political crisis is through domestic pressure. It is the most dangerous way, when people will get into streets. Our supporters are asking this every day. They stand ready to come out and help the legitimate new government take the power. But we are calling on them to not come out and to keep calm. But all this cannot be restrained for long. Therefore a solution must be achieved”, said the President.
