OP LEADER MAINTAINS NEW PARLIAMENTARY MAJORITY WANTS TO ABOLISH DIRECT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

18 july, 2019

Renato Usatii, leader of the Partidul Nostru (Our Party, OP), maintains that the new parliamentary majority wants to abolish direct presidential elections.

Usatii stated in his video address cast on the social networks: “There are certain interested people who are trying to knit together a constitutional majority in parliament by using Plahotniuc’s methods. For this, they need to cancel direct presidential elections, which they fear they will lose. A high-ranked citizen has decided to achieve the holding on October 20 together with local elections yet early parliamentary elections in 6-7 single-member constituencies”.

In his opinion, the coalition authorities want all the three independent deputies to resign – along with several Democrat MPs, so as to thus hold snap elections in these single-member constituencies simultaneously with the local elections.

“The new parliamentary majority is counting that the elections in these constituencies will be won by Socialist or ACUM candidates, and this will permit the coalition to introduce amendments to the Constitution in order to return to electing presidents as before – in the Parliament. I welcome the defeat and collapse of the Plahotniuc’s Democratic Party. I guess the DP could be well outlawed. But we are entering into a situation not at all funny, when a specific political configuration is shaped to the advantage of this or that concrete personality. I suggest watching this political circus for some time. But it is not correct. As far as I understand, neither Igor Dodon nor Maia Sandu wants a direct presidential election. Realizing that they may lose the presidential election, they decided to give it up. But in such case, what is the difference between us and the Plahotniuc power that has gone?” wondered Renato Usatii.
