MOLDOVA TO HAVE ONE MORE ANTI-CORRUPTION AGENCY

09 august, 2019

Next week, the Moldovan Government will discuss the establishment of a Bureau for struggle against corruption and for judiciary reform to function under the Prime Minister’s auspices, Premier Sandu announced on Friday at a briefing she convened due to the Superior Council of Prosecutors’ decision to hold a contest for appointing Moldova’s Prosecutor General.

In her words, the SCP’s decision, taken today contrary to the Government’s initiatives and addresses concerning changing of the candidate selection procedure for the essential post, “goes contrary to citizens’ expectations”.

“They [SCP] have initiated the contest despite the existence of a corresponding bill already approved in a first reading, by means of which the procedure of selecting a Prosecutor General is being changed. One can have an impression that the Superior Council of Prosecutors has not comprehended until now that the time has already passed forever when they felt free to appoint such corrupt figures to the Prosecutor General’s post as Eduard Harunjen, Igor Popa or Adriana Betisor. This SCP has already proved many a time that they regard themselves to be standing above all laws and national interests. But to be an independent institution does not mean to act against the law and citizens’ interests”, stressed the Prime Minister.

Sandu said that the main problem of the Moldovan justice system is the absence of a really independent Prosecution Service, and this is convincingly proved by the today’s decision taken by the Superior Council of Prosecutors, which event is showing that the SCP members will continue working for corrupt personalities.

In her words, the Bureau will consist of the civil society representatives, international experts and the heads of all the state institutions related to justice and struggle against corruption.
