CEC APPOINTS SECOND ROUND OF LOCAL ELECTIONS FOR NOVEMBER 3

23 octomber, 2019

On Wednesday, the Moldova Central Election Commission officially approved the date of the second round of mayoral elections [only, because Municipal Councils are elected in one round] – the Sunday of November 3.

The second round will take place in 383 populated areas. The names of two finalist candidates will be printed in ballot-papers in a descending order of ballots polled in the first round: who polled more stand above.

If one of two candidates decides to withdraw from the elections, he or she must announce this officially not later than 7 days before the Election Day. In such case the ‘vacancy’ will be offered to the next, 3rd, candidate who has polled more than other in the first round.

By not later than November 1, all candidates must submit to the CEC their statements of revenues and expenditures for the election campaign’s second round.

Like at the snap local election held in June 2018, the Chisinau Mayor’s post is again being contested by Socialist Ion Ceban (40.19% in the first round) and Andrei Nastase of the ACUM bloc (31.08%).

In the first round held on October 20, only 515 mayors of cities, towns, villages and communes were elected – out of their total number of 898. According to the CEC’s preliminary results, in the second round mayoral posts will be contested by 175 Socialists, 173 Democrats, 167 ACUM candidates, 44 Liberal Democrats, 38 candidates from Ilan Shor Party and 20 – from Our Party, as well as by a number of independent candidates.
