27 november, 2019

Ambassador Peter Michalko, the Head of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova, has highlighted the important role played by the European Union Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) in the development of trans-border cooperation between the two countries.

Speaking at the news conference following the 33rd meeting of the EUBAM Advisory Board held in Chisinau on Wednesday, the diplomat said that the Board analyzed the evolution taking place along three main directions the Mission works in – integration of joint border control, support for preventing crimes on the border, and support for Transnistrian conflict settlement process.

“In all the three spheres, progress can be observed reached thanks to the interaction of the representatives of the EUBAM, Moldova and Ukraine. We discussed the further interaction of the countries on their common border by means of creating joint checkpoints like the one already opened at Palanca-Mayaki-Udobnoe. Also, I would like to highlight the Mission experts’ vast contribution to the solution of technical questions of the profiled working groups on the Transnistrian conflict settlement”, said the EU diplomat.

EUBAM Head Slawomir Pichor underlined the excellently organized cooperation with partners and their desire to receive necessary support for resolving trans-border issues.

“Both Moldova and Ukraine are demonstrating progress in this direction by using European standards. Cooperation with the Mission permits the two countries to better understand European standards, the reaching of which is a final goal. This means an easy and convenient border crossing for citizens and the provision of a due border security. Over many years of the EUBAM work, we saw how the countries were harmonizing their legislation, which served a good foundation for efficient work on the border, and in 2017 this was expressed in the signing of an Agreement on joint border control. It presupposes the appearance of an up-to-date structure permitting to further develop the cooperation”, said Slawomir Pichor.

According to the EUBAM Head, with such a modernization trend and with the European Union’s support, the partners will be developing a network of joint border checkpoints – in Giurgiulesti, Cuciurgan, and work invigoration in this directions is expected by next spring.
