PRESIDENT DODON SAYS THAT SITUATION IN MOLDOVA HAS NOTICEABLY IMPROVED OVER LAST HALF-YEAR

03 december, 2019

Moldova President Igor Dodon believes that last half a year, situation in the country has noticeably improved.

Dodon said on the local television on Monday night: “A positive dynamic can be observed in everything. We have managed to make the Moldovan State free. There is no more that total control over state institutions, which existed before. Some things we have achieved team-like with the ACUM bloc. We turned Vlad Plahotniuc out of the country, and it was a very correct step. I do not regret that the Party of Socialists created a governing coalition with ACUM last summer”.

In his opinion, that coalition should have been preserved, “but Maia Sandu decided differently”.

“It was a political mistake, an emotional decision after the local election that was not quite happy for her. Besides that, Maia Sandu’s decision was not agreed upon with anybody – neither with us [Socialists], nor inside ACUM, nor with external partners, who were greatly disappointed”, presumes President Dodon.

He admitted that the Sandu Government’s resignation would take place at any rate, but later, and during that extra time the coalition could do “something useful. For instance, during the extra 3-4 weeks we could form a majority in Raion Councils [district legislations], and ACUM could have its Chairpersons in 10-15 raions of Moldova [out of their total number of 33]. ACUM could now have a different situation”.

In his words, now the new Government of Prime Minister Ion Chicu is facing serious challenges.

“One should recognize that our [Socialist] team has been in power – in the Government, Presidential Administration, and 17 raions of Moldova are headed by our Chairpersons. This is a great responsibility, and we realize this. The new Government is supposed to promote concrete reforms and the de-oligarchization process. We have a good possibility for laying a foundation for stability in economy, social sphere and in justice system”, said the President.
