MOLDOVA NEEDS DETERMINED AND INDEPENDENT PROSECUTORS AND JUDGES - PETER MICHALKO

13 january, 2020

Ambassador Peter Michalko, Head of the European Union Delegation to Moldova, reacted to the detention of the Head of the Anticorruption Prosecution Service Viorel Morari, who initiated a number of investigations recently.

"We are watching very closely what is happening in prosecution in Moldova. During last months, the anti-corruption prosecutors made several important steps forward in most crucial criminal investigations. Moldova needs determined and independent officers, prosecutors and judges who are ready to deliver real results in fighting corruption. Moldovan people deserve to live free from corruption, protected by institutions to whom they can finally trust", Michalko wrote on is Facebook page.

World Bank Country Manager for Moldova Anna Akhalkatsi shared the diplomat's concerns, commenting on his post.

"Cannot agree more - you voiced my concerns. Anticorruption prosecutors indeed made several important steps in crucial investigations. Dropping the ball at this stage could further undermine trust in institutions and become a major blow to anticorruption efforts", she wrote.
