PRESIDENT DODON SAYS MOLDOVAN CONSTITUTIONAL COURT CONSISTS OF COMPETENT JUDGES NOT INVOLVED IN POLITICAL GAMES

21 february, 2020

The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova consists of competent people not involved in political games, Moldova President Igor Dodon stated on Thursday, opening an international conference held in Chisinau on the occasion of the Court's 25th anniversary.

The President stated: "The situation in the country has changed for the better lately because we have managed to overcome a political crisis last June, when attempts were often made to use the Constitutional Court as a political instrument. Now this high Court consists of competent people who are not involved in political games. Thanks to this, the Court has returned citizens' trust, and is again standing as a defender of the country's state system against any criminal infringements".

The head of state assured the foreign guests of the conference that the Republic of Moldova leadership is open to discussions and stands ready to discuss amendments to the legislation in force when such necessity appears.

The international conference dedicated to the Moldovan Constitutional Court's anniversary brought together a delegation from the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe led by Commission President Gianni Buquicchio, and the Chairpersons of the Constitutional Courts of 14 countries.

As was already reported by Infotag, the previous Constitutional Court tendered resignation after the Moldovan political crisis of June 2019, which was triggered inter alia by a series of dubious judgments made by that Court. After that, a new composition of the Constitutional Court was approved through holding a professional contest. However, civil society representatives cast doubt on that contest, saying that practically all the Judges in the new Constitutional Court had been members of various political parties before that.
