PREMIER SAYS POLITICAL CONFRONTATION ONLY UNDERMINES CITIZENS' CONFIDENCE IN MOLDOVA'S FUTURE

24 february, 2020

The aggravating political confrontation is undermining citizens' confidence in the future of the republic, Prime Minister Ion Chicu stated at a news conference on Friday, presenting a short version of his Report on the first 100 days of his Government. Its full version failed to be presented in the Parliament today because opposition deputies blocked the forum's main rostrum, demanding to dismiss Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Aurel Ciocoi now.

"Paradoxically enough, but in my communication with foreign investors it became clear that the foreigners have much more confidence in Moldova than its citizens. It hurts to hear, particularly from school teachers, that 'this people' has no future and that there is nobody 'in this republic' to be proud of", said the Prime Minister.

Ion Chicu said with satisfaction that Moldova had managed to complete the 2019 financial year with indicators better than those agreed on with the International Monetary Fund.

"In 2019, we reduced the country's state debt down to 25.2% GDP size against 27.1% the year before. The share of foreign gratuitous financial assistance in the public sector marked 2.4%, whereas our own revenues grew up by 10%", said the Premier.

The foreign assistance of 69 million euros was provided to Moldova on the results of 2013-2018, and therefore one of the last year's three Governments [Maia Sandu's] had no relation to receiving that money, said Ion Chicu.

The Premier believes that yet another achievement of his Cabinet was that in the result of negotiations with the IMF, tariffs did not go up in Moldova, and the incumbent authorities did not cancel their plans to invest in infrastructure. As a result, as much as 7 billion lei will be invested in the road sector alone.

"Thanks to the good tax administration, State Budget revenues in January 2020 grew up by 15%, or by 500 million lei, against January 2019. Remains on accounts by the end of this past January were in the excess of 4.7 billion lei, which is the reflection of a real struggle against grey schemes: by the end of the month, all bills had been repaid, and money yet remained", said the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Ion Chicu stated also that the negotiations with Russia on a sovereign credit for Moldova in the amount of US$300 million have been completed, and the sides are discussing the last element -interest rate.

"The arrival of the Russian credit for Moldova is somewhat delayed, because the new Russian Government is making some corrections in the 2020 federal budget. As soon as the money comes, it will be immediately invested in road rehabilitation", said Ion Chicu.

In 2020, Moldova is projecting to repair 350 kilometers of roads on the National Road Fund means and on the Russian credit.
