ANDREI POPOV APPOINTED AS AMBASSADOR-AT-LARGE

04 june, 2020

Career diplomat Andrei Popov has been just appointed as Ambassador-at-Large for the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. So, he has returned to the Ministry after a 4-year-long pause, Popov wrote on his Facebook page.

The diplomat used those years for political analysis, journalism etc. Also, he became one of the founders and a leading official of the Institute of Strategic Initiatives.

In 2009-2013, Andrei Popov was a deputy of the Moldovan Parliament from the Democratic Party, and then worked as a Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 2014-2016, Popov was Moldova’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Austria. In November 2016, he tendered resignation from the ambassadorial post in Vienna and divorced the ruling Democratic Party, being strongly against the leadership methods used by party leader Vladimir Plahotniuc.

Moldovan diplomats are saying that the Ambassador-at-Large is a transition post for Andrei Popov, who may be appointed as Ambassador to Austria once again. The Presidential Decree on recalling incumbent Ambassador Victor Osipov was signed yet last March, but he is still remaining in Vienna.
