MOLDOVA MAKES NO PROGRESS IN JUSTICE REFORM, INVESTIGATION OF BILLION THEFT, FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION - EU AMBASSADOR TO RM PETER MICHALKO

15 september, 2020

Reform of justice, investigation of the theft of a billion from banks, fight against corruption are three areas in which, according to EU Ambassador Peter Michalko, Moldova "has not achieved satisfactory results".

The diplomat said on Monday within the framework of the European Dialogues at the Infotag agency that "the reform of justice has not yet been implemented," expressing the hope "to see results in the future."

"Among other important areas is the investigation of bank theft. Six years have passed since the crime, which caused economic damage to Moldova in the amount of 12% of its GDP, and we still do not see a single participant invoked to responsibility," the diplomat said.

He also mentioned the need for further more meaningful progress in the fight against corruption.

"Corruption is the greatest evil, this phenomenon leads to a decrease in the quality of life of people, and is an obstacle to the country's development, economic growth, investment attraction and prosperity," Michalko said.

Therefore, according to him, the European Union "calls on those responsible for making decisions in the Republic of Moldova to do everything necessary to change the situation, to achieve European standards, the effectiveness of state institutions, which is what the citizens of the Republic of Moldova expect."
