CEC REJECTS ACCUSATIONS OF ITS ALLEGED ELECTION RIGGING BY MEANS OF PRELIMINARY REGISTRATION

16 september, 2020

The Moldovan Central Election Commission regards as fully unfounded the accusations being heard from some November 1 election runners that the Commission is allegedly going to falsify election results by using a preliminary registration of Moldovan voters staying in foreign countries. The Commission’s press service has stated the CEC is ready to analyze – within its legal powers – all the statements being made and all the information available on the issue.

The CEC has called on politicians and the civil society to abstain from inventions and false accusations that may only undermine citizens’ trust in the electoral process. The Commission assured that if whatever deviations or faults are revealed, they will be immediately eliminated.

The CEC has reported that as on September 16, which is the deadline for the preliminary registration of Moldova citizens staying in foreign countries as well as residing permanently in the Transnistrian region, over 52 thousand voters have got registered. Most of them are in Italy – over 10 thousand, Great Britain – 8 thousand, Russia – 5.8 thousand, Germany – more than 5,000.

The CEC has reminded that at opening polling stations abroad, it takes into account the number of voters who took part in the previous nation-wide election; the data on preliminary registration of Moldova citizens eligible to vote; information of foreign countries’ authorities concerning the number and location of Moldova citizens staying in countries concerned etc.

The Commission stressed that the preliminary registration bears an informational character and does not demand whatever obligations from citizens.
