PASSENGER TRAFFIC TO BE RESTRICTED ON ELECTION DAY TO PREVENT BUSING OF VOTERS – CEC

21 octomber, 2020

On the presidential election day, passenger traffic in Moldova will be restricted in order to prevent an organized transportation of voters to polling stations, the Central Election Commission decided on Tuesday evening.

On November 1, the movement of motor vehicles with a carrying capacity of over 8 persons shall be prohibited, with the exception of regular passenger traffic.

“To avoid transportation of voters to polling stations, from 7.00 hrs to 21.00 hrs on the election day, movement shall be permitted in the territory of Moldova only to motor vehicles having a carrying capacity of not more than 8 people as well as to buses involved in the regular passenger circulation”, said the decision.

It was taken by the CEC on the initiative of ex-Minister of Justice Olesea Stamate, who is now the official representative of presidential candidate Maia Sandu at the Central Election Commission, though in an advisory capacity only.

Earlier, Maia Sandu voiced apprehension lest certain interested forces might organize the busing of voters from the Transnistrian region, as it happened in 2016 and 2019.

In case of non-observance of the said prohibition, the traffic police have been authorized to take appropriate measures – up to halting such motor vehicles.
