IGOR DODON DECIDES NOT TO ATTEND SANDU INAUGURATION CEREMONY

24 december, 2020

Ex-President Igor Dodon has decided not to attend the Thursday’s inauguration of Maia Sandu as the Republic of Moldova’s new President.

Speaking over the Moldova-1 public television channel on Wednesday night, Dodon explained that the inauguration ceremony would consist of two parts – a solemn swearing-in to take place in the Palatul Republicii [Palace of the Republic] and a symbolic transfer of power in the Presidential Palace.

“On Wednesday evening, we held a meeting of the parliamentary faction of the Party of Socialists (PSRM), and decided that neither I nor PSRM deputies would attend the inauguration. Parliament Speaker Zinaida Greceanii will open the ceremony and will be present there to the end, though I believe this could well be done by one of Deputy Speakers. On Thursday, I will not be present at the inauguration. This is a purely protocol procedure, in which outgoing president does not play whatever role”, said Igor Dodon.

But as for the second part of this entire event, the transfer of power, an outgoing president must be present according to the protocol, he said.

“This will take place at about 12-13 hours, depending on when Ms. Sandu gets free. I will wait for her in the Presidential Palace with a bouquet of flowers. I will congratulate her, and we will hold a civilized procedure of handing-over plenary powers. I will wish her success and will say that I am always at her service if she needs the consultancies of a former president”, said Igor Dodon.
