PRESIDENT SANDU STARTS CONSULTATIONS WITH PARLIAMENTARY FACTIONS

28 december, 2020

On Monday, President Maia Sandu began consultations with Parliament factions on holding a snap election, reported the presidential press service.

According to published schedule, the first such meeting began in the morning with the Parliament’s largest faction of the Party of Socialists (PSRM). After it, President Sandu is to meet with the factions of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), of the Platforma DA, Democratic Party, Sor Party and with the Pro Moldova group.

Sandu announced also that after the consultations, she will organize a news conference at about 6 pm to report results and accords.

Prime Minister Ion Chicu announced the resignation of his Government last Wednesday, stressing that he was thus creating conditions for new President Maia Sandu to dissolve the incumbent Parliament and announce a snap election.

According to the law, in case of Government’s resignation, the President must hold consultations with parliamentary factions so as to nominate a candidate for Prime Minister. At that, the President must take into account the opinion of a parliamentary majority if such a majority has been formalized by concluding an officially signed coalition agreement. Presently, the Party of Socialists and the Sor Party have a majority in the forum and they vote team-like, but they have not signed an agreement on forming an official parliamentary majority. They maintain they stand ready for an early parliamentary election.

The President is eligible to dissolve the Parliament and appoint a snap election date only if the Parliament fails to vote confidence in Government within 45 days since bringing in such a proposal, and only if the proposal was rejected minimum 2 times.
