MAIA SANDU SPEAKS FOR USING SHORTEST WAY TO EARLY PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION

14 january, 2021

Moldova needs to move to a snap election by using a shortest-possible road, President Maia Sandu stated at the news conference she convened on Wednesday to cover the results of her yesterday's official visit to Ukraine.

Maia Sandu made it clear that for the time being, she is not going to nominate a candidate for prime minister for trying to form a government or for holding an early parliamentary election, thus hinting at ex-president Vladimir Voronin and Our Party leader Renato Usatii, who stated on the local television on Tuesday their readiness to become candidates for the premiership so that to thus make the Parliament reject their candidacies and agree for a snap election.

"Moldova needs a serious government, with a reliable backing by parliament. The biggest problem is that there is no such support in the incumbent Parliament, which has exhausted itself as an entity. Moldova citizens want an early parliamentary election and they stated this explicitly at the presidential elections held last November", said Maia Sandu.

She underscored that any nomination of candidates for premier and attempts to form a government are only a waste of time, "But we have to advance to the snap election by using a shortest-possible way. This is precisely what we are trying to do now".

In Sandu's words, she is waiting for the Constitutional Court's judgment in response to her inquiry concerning the possibility of self-dissolution of the Parliament, and "Until then, it is premature to discuss any other variants, for everything will depend on what the Constitutional Court decides".
