SOCIALISTS DEMAND THAT PRESIDENT SANDU NOMINATE CANDIDATE FOR PREMIER BEFORE FEBRUARY 1

19 january, 2021

The Party of Socialists demands that President Maia Sandu must nominate a candidate for prime minister by February 1 at the latest, PSRM leader Igor Dodon stated at a news conference organized on Monday following a sitting of the PSRM Executive Committee.

Dodon stated that Maia Sandu, inaugurated into office less than one month ago, is already violating Constitutional Court decisions. One of them, passed last August 6, says that the President must nominate a candidacy for prime minister.

"By having stated that she would not nominate a candidate, Maia Sandu has driven herself into a political zugzwang", said Igor Dodon, a many-year President of Moldova's National Chess Federation. He explained that a player is said to be "in zugzwang" when any possible move will worsen their position.

Dodon said that on Tuesday PSRM deputies will apply to the Constitutional Court to receive answers to two questions: (1) what is the longest-possible time during which the president must nominate a candidacy for prime minister? and (2) what sanctions are applied to president if they do not fulfill their duty of nominating a candidacy for prime minister?

The Party of Socialists Chairman made a conclusion that Maia Sandu has no idea how she should act: "She is in a crisis of ideas, and she has no solutions".

"So, we can begin tracing Maia Sandu's second failure - after the first one that happened shortly after she had been appointed prime minister [in June 2019]. The Ion Chicu Government was dismissed almost one month ago. So, what is President Sandu busy with? She must start working, if she says that a record-breaking number of citizens voted for her [at the presidential election of November 2020]", stated Igor Dodon.
