JUSTICE MINISTER SAYS DISPUTING IN THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT OF THE "LAW ON LANGUAGES" WILL BE A FAILURE

20 january, 2021

The victory in the legal dispute, which the deputies who have challenged the law “On the Functioning of Languages on the Territory of Moldova” in the Constitutional Court (CC) are hoping for, will turn into a political failure, regardless of the decision taken by the magistrates, Minister of Justice Fadei Nagacevschii said at a briefing on Wednesday , criticizing the authors of the request – deputies Dinu Plingau and Octavian Ticu.

As Infotag reports, he stressed that the law provides citizens with access to information of a public nature, as well as to public services.

“The law takes into account the number of Russian speakers, not the number of Russians. Seeking legal benefits can turn into political disasters. You don't even have to fight. You yourself are doing everything possible for political self-destruction,” the minister stated.

In his opinion, “the attempts of some irresponsible politicians to divide society according to ethnic and linguistic criteria will end in disastrous failure.”

The official invited the authors of the request to the Constitutional Court to travel to Gagauzia and Taraclia, where the Russian language is the most frequently used language.

“I noticed that the deputies believe that by attacking the Russian language they will increase their political rating. They seem to forget that the residents of Taraclia, Gagauzia communicate with them in Russian,” the minister concluded.

The opposition representatives ask the Constitutional Court to establish whether the new law adopted in December 2020 violates the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova.
