IGOR DODON BELIEVES THE PROBLEM OF POLLING STATIONS ABROAD SHOULD BE TACKLED BY CEC

11 june, 2021

The Party of Socialists (PSRM) Chairman and Moldova ex-President, Igor Dodon, presumes that the problem of opening of Moldovan polling stations in foreign countries should be tackled by the Central Election Commission.

Dodon said during his traditional weekly online communication with citizens on Friday: “People ask me, why on Earth should our destiny be decided by those who live abroad?! This is not my opinion, but citizens ask this question. I think that this problem must be solved by the Central Election Commission so as to ensure an equal right to vote to all citizens”.

In his words, nearly 400 thousand citizens of Moldova live in European countries, and 250 thousand of them participated in the presidential election last November [and 95% of them voted for Maia Sandu].

“In Russia, there are also 400 thousand Moldovans, but only 12 thousand of them voted last November. In Transnistria, there are 200 thousand citizens [eligible to vote], but only 30 thousand of them took part in the last election. Now let’s compare proportions. In the West – 400 thousand people, of whom 250 thousand voted. In Russia plus Transnistria – 600 thousand people, but only 45-50 thousand of them voted. And where is justice? If we really want to be just and fair, we must ensure an equal right to vote”, stated Igor Dodon.

The ex-president stands against closing polling stations for Transnistria residents, “and those who hamper a free will expression must be brought to criminal responsibility”.
