EUROPEAN UNION AMBASSADOR TO MOLDOVA DECLARES EU'S WILLINGNESS TO FACILITATE REFORM PROCESS

04 octomber, 2021

The Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Moldova, Janis Mazeiks, announced the EU's readiness to contribute to the process of reforms carried out by the authorities of the republic. He wrote about this on his facebook page, summing up the results of the first month of work in the Republic of Moldova.

The Ambassador noted that in a short time he met with the President, Prime Minister and Speaker of the Parliament, with the Minister of Justice and Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration.

“I am convinced of the readiness of the new government to make every effort to carry out much-needed reforms in the country,” the diplomat stressed.

In addition, he emphasized that “the EU is ready to support reforms in Moldova, and the recent visit of Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita and Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu to Brussels clearly demonstrated this.”

“During the meetings, senior EU officials expressed support for the government's ambitious reform agenda, especially in the areas of rule of law, justice reform and anti-corruption,” stated Mazeiks.

Speaking about joint efforts in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the official assured that the EU will help Moldova in this fight, as well as in overcoming the consequences of the epidemic. At the same time, he called on Moldovan citizens to be vaccinated.

The head of EU Delegation to the republic especially outlined the hospitality of the citizens of Moldova.

“I have already felt how cordial and hospitable the Moldovan people are. I happened to meet people on the streets and in the beautiful clean parks of Chisinau. I met some of them in the framework of projects that the EU is implementing in Moldova, for example, in Straseni, where a school is being renovated. Of course, there is a need for other improvements throughout Moldova, especially in terms of infrastructure. The EU is here to help,” the EU Ambassador assured.

The diplomat also admitted that he is looking forward to meeting new people.

“I want to meet with those who already feel the support of the EU and those who want to understand what the European Union is and why it wants to become an important partner for Moldova,” the Ambassador Mazeiks summed up.

The new EU Ambassador to Moldova arrived in Chisinau in early September. Previously, he was the Latvian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, and also served as the President's Foreign Policy Adviser. He holds a degree in Political Science and is fluent in English, Russian, French and Danish.
