MOLDOVAN PARLIAMENT DE-IMMUNIZES SOR PARTY MP MARINA TAUBER

26 may, 2023

On Friday, the Moldovan Parliament made a decision to deprive MP Marina Tauber of the opposition Sor Party of her parliamentary immunity. Tauber is being accused of illegal financing of the Sor Party by an “organized criminal group”.

The de-immunization decision was voted for by 59 deputies from the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS). The bloc of Communists and Socialists did not take part in the voting, and the Sor Party faction has been boycotting parliament plenary meetings for many weeks by now. .

The request to lift the parliamentary immunity off Marina Tauber was put forward by Acting Prosecutor General Ion Munteanu. According to him, the Prosecutor General's Office asks to deprive the Sor Party Deputy Chairperson of her immunity in the framework of cases of illegal financing of the party “so as to thus create the possibility of her arrest and of bringing her case to the court.”

“Two of the cases concern the illegal financing of the party and the falsification of financial statements as part of the election campaign in November 2021, when Tauber ran for Mayor of the city of Balti. Another request concerns the “conscious acceptance of funding from an organized criminal group or criminal organization” within the framework of the election campaign in Gagauzia,” Munteanu said.

Marina Tauber has already been stripped of her immunity in a criminal case for involvement in bank fraud. She was in custody, then under house arrest and under the recognizance not to leave. The court again transferred her to house arrest after she had tried to fly to Israel on May 1, where the leader of the Sor party Ilan Sor is hiding.
