LABOR MIGRATION DISCUSSED IN NEW FORMAT IN CHISINAU

Labor migration issues, as well as the need to use money remittances for the development of Moldovan economy, were discussed today in Chisinau in a new format, using the Open Spaсe Technology.

The conference entitled “Migration - Quo Vadis Moldova?” was organized by the Hilfswerk Austria in Moldova, in partnership with the Institute of Public Policies within the framework of the “Remittances Developing Moldovan Communities” Project, with the financial support of the European Union.

Executive Director of the Institute of Public Policies, moderator of the event Arcadie Barbarosie said that the migration process in Moldova is very complex and uncontrollable.

“We cannot forbid our people leave the country and we cannot oblige them return to their homeland. In such conditions we should make the migration process contribute to the development of the national economy, regardless of the number of Moldovan migrants – 500 thousand or one million,” he said.

The participants in today’s conference, among which economic experts, business entities, former gastarbeiters, representatives of non-governmental organizations and students expressed their willingness to examine how money remittances influence different social groups, especially children and how can these proceeds be efficiently used for ensuring the development of the country. At the same time, they discussed ways to improve the dialogue between the Moldovan Diaspora and the Moldovan communities, in order to efficiently use the remittances so as to ensure the successful development of all Moldovan populated areas.

The participants in the event also said that usually, migrant workers are quite reluctant when it comes to investments in the national economy, because of the current instability in the state, of the bureaucratic hindrances, corruption, poor support provided by the state, involvement of politicians into the country’s economic processes and the lack of a strategic development vision.

They also came to the conclusion that in order to attract the proceeds of labor migrants in the country, it is necessary to create the needed conditions and first of all, to ensure financial stability and to facilitate the business registration procedure in Moldova.

Victor Koroli, manager of the “Remittances Developing Moldovan Communities” Project said that the open space is an innovational method for Moldova that allows the participants discussing the questions they are highly interested in. He also said that the core difference between this method and the traditional ones is the lack of an initial agenda of the day. Thus, the participants have the possibility to set their own agenda, in the first 30-90 minutes of the meeting, which allows them using their personal experience and openness in the discussion process.
