​CAHUL PRISON ADMINISTRATION ACCUSED OF TORTURING PRISONERS

The Cahul prison №5 warden, chiefs of security and surveillance, two parole officers and two security guards will be brought to justice accused of tortures, inhuman and degrading treatment of three prisoners.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Military Prosecutor’s office from Cahul completed criminal proceedings against them and sent the case for consideration in Chisinau Military Court.

According to the prosecutors, during 2010-2012 the accused were torturing at least three prisoners, including two minors. The reason for such a treatment were obscene remarks against the prison administration, attempts to make holes in the cell walls.

Learning about the complaint to the prosecutor’s office, the prison warden threatened the prisoners with physical violence, problems with other prisoners and prison administration. He demanded that the complaint to be withdrawn and the testimony to be changed.

During the investigation the victims were transferred to other prisons.

No one of the accused prison officers has been dismissed. If found guilty, they face up to 10 years of imprisonment, with the five-year deprivation of the right to occupy certain posts.
