FORMER ACC CHAIRMAN GHEORGHE GORINCIOI COMMITS SUICIDE

29 july, 2015

Gheorghe Gorincioi, 66, the former Chairman of the Audiovisual Coordinating Council (ACC), was found hanged up on a tree at his dacha [suburban countryside house] at Pirita village (Dubasari Raion).

He came to the place last Monday, but when his family members failed to get him on the phone for unusually long on Tuesday morning, they rushed to Pirita and found him there. The police are examining his suicide note.

In March 2015 Gorincioi was sentenced to 4 years, though with a 3-year probation, on charges of passive corruption. The former ACC Chairman was deprived of the right to hold administrative posts for subsequent 3 years.

Gorincioi and Terente Cherdivara, ex-Director of the ACC Administrative Department, got into the law enforcement’s field of vision after the two gentlemen had demanded an 110,000 lei bribe from a private television company. Otherwise they threatened to organize a thorough check of TV programs’ quality and the volume of services rendered against the contract concluded with the media watchdog. Cherdivara was caught red-handed at the bribe acceptance moment. He received 7 years in jail.

Infotag’s dossier: In 1980-1986, Gheorghe Gorincioi was Head of the Department of Journalism at Moldova State University, in 1997-2001 – counselor, then Envoy-Minister at the Embassy of Moldova to Romania. In 2002-2006 he was Envoy-Minister at the Embassy of Moldova to Russia. He was elected as ACC Chairman in September 2007.
