MOLDOVA HAS THE RIGHT TO GET UNITED WITH ROMANIA AND TRANSNISTRIA – WITH RUSSIA, PROMINENT RUSSIAN JOURNALIST SAYS

15 september, 2015

The Republic of Moldova has the right to get united with Romania, and Transnistria – with Russia, renowned Moscow journalist Maxim Shevchenko stated on the Russian News Service radio on Monday night, and stressed that all this must be done exclusively through referendum holding.

“We should not forget that Moldovans are our coreligionists. They are Orthodox Christians, like we are. Very many of them are working in Russia. Now Moldovans have come out to protest against the gigantic thefts from the State Budget. I don't know what is happening there really, but I believe in all this. Otherwise, how can such a much-working and industrious nation live so badly?” wondered Shevchenko.

In his opinion, one should not forget that a considerable part of the Moldovan people wants to reunite with Romania.

“This is a topic that needs a very detailed and thorough discussion. There may be an exchange: the Crimea’s reunification with Russia has created a precedent for other regions of Europe. Strange as this may be, but the European Union will most probably be against this because the Crimea alone may be perceived as a chance occurrence, a fortuity, but the Crimea and Moldova will mean a regularity. Things will go further: Kosovo will wish to get united with Albania and so forth”, said Maxim Shevchenko.

The journalist repeated that such kind of things needs to be solved only through holding referenda.

“I supported the Crimea’s return into Russia, for such was the will [over 98.8%] of the Crimean population. As for Moldova and its unification with Romania, let’s be honest – this is one and the same nation, and they speak one and the same language. The difference between the two languages is like differences between southern Russian, Crimean dialect and the Russian language proper. That’s why in exchange for Transnistria’s becoming an independent and sovereign entity and for its possible becoming a part of the Russian Federation, Moldova may go to Romania if the republic really wishes this. Why not? Transnistria can exist like does our Kaliningrad oblast [an enclave region on the Baltic Sea coast separated from main Russia by Lithuania and Belarus]. This would let improve our relations with the Moldovan and Romanian peoples”, said the journalist.

In his opinion, if Moldova goes to Romania, “sanctions against the Crimea will seem an absurd, and then the Crimea will be regarded as a legitimate will expression by the Crimea residents – what the Europeans are currently resisting to so strongly”.

“I think that the Moldovan people should solve this question at a referendum. The friendly Romanian people were our allies in the Balkan war against Turkey [19th century]. We constantly forget that not only Russian warriors sacrificed their lives in that war, but Romanians as well. Romanians were our brothers-in-arms during the First World War. Yes, in 1941 they invaded the Soviet Union territory under Nazi flags, having yielded to Hitler’s persuasions and blackmail, and Romanian fascists really brought much evil and grievances to us. But in 1944, Romanians expiated their guilt because the Romanian army turned their weapons against Hitler and started fighting on the Soviet Union’s side against fascist Hungary and Germany, and in that war hundreds of thousands of Romanians perished. So, Romanians are no enemies to us. They are of the same faith as we are, an Orthodox nation”, said Shevchenko.
