POLICE APPLIED TEAR-GAS AGAINST SUPPORTERS OF “I AM NOT AFRAID” CAMPAIGN

27 august, 2016

Police blocked the access of protesters in the Chisinau main square, where the military parade, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Republic of Moldova’s independence has been held. Law enforcement had to recur to power, while then to tear-gas for stopping the angry crowd.

The protesters are supporters of the civil action “I Am Not Afraid”, who were standing 70-100 meters away from the ball game. They tried to come in the Great Popular Assembly Square to disrupt the parade, blocking with their own bodies the military machinery of the Moldova National Army from moving through the square.

After the parade finished and the country high leadership left the square, law enforcement officers unblocked the square, letting dozens of protesters in.

According to Infotag interviewees, the “I Am Not Afraid” action, morally supported by leaders of some opposition parties, was completely devoid of any organizing and mostly resembled a spontaneous gathering.

“People’s faces were expressing discontent and readiness to protest, but the today’s rally did not have real organizers”, said a 30-year-old Chisinau citizen Nadejda Grozavu, pointing at absence of opposition leaders in the square.

Asked who she is talking about, the woman said Andrei Nastase (DA Party Chairman) and Renato Usatii (Our Party Chairman).
