NOBODY EXCEPT OURSELVES CAN MAKE ORDER IN THE COUNTRY – MOLDOVAN PRESIDENT

27 august, 2016

Speaking from the rostrum in the Great Popular Assembly Square in Chisinau on Saturday, President of Moldova Nicolae Timofti called on the Government and the Parliament to a coordinated work for regaining the trust of people and making order in the country.

“No stranger will come to make order in our house, it is us who has to do this. The political class will keep facing deficit of trust until the bank fraud is uncovered”, Timofti stressed, insisting upon conducting investigation and punishing the guilty.

He added that the Republic of Moldova has overcome a lot of difficulties to reach the today’s day and celebrate the 25th anniversary of independence.

“25 years ago, dozens of thousands of people gathered in this square and expressed their will to become independent from the empire they were living in. Today we are remembering all those patriots, who made the independence possible, defended it on the Dniester. We preserved the aspiration for independence. Over these years we understood that freedom and rights may be obtained only by means of fighting and hard working. We understood that answers to many of our questions may be found in the Declaration of Independence. This document contains our aspiration for independence, freedom and European integration”, the President said.

He stressed that Moldova has signed an Association Agreement with the EU and became the single CIS country which was granted visa-free regime with EU countries. The president said that “the Association Agreement is the country’s only chance to modernize”.

“We have to move forward on the chosen path, to overcome nostalgic moods of a part of citizens about the Soviet past, which has lately been repainted in Eurasian colors. Over the recent years, we proved that we are European citizens, inspired with European spirit and having European visions. With time, all this will give results. Difficult times we are living in, force us to understand that we have to take precautions and be ready to any situation. This is confirmed by events that are taking place in Ukraine, Syria, Turkey”, Timofti said.

Timofti said that Moldova’s main partners on the path of integration in the EU are European countries, first of all Romania, and the USA.

At the same time, the head of the state reproached Russia with intervention in the Transnistrian conflict.

“Immediately after declaring independence, Moldova was forced to defend its sovereignty and independence with weapons in hands. In the armed conflict on the Dniester River, protectors of the territorial integrity faced the Russia’s 14th Army. Later, we had to face multiple trade embargoes and sanctions imposed by Russia”, Timofti said.

During the Timofti’s speaking, the police cordoned the square and prevented representatives of opposition from coming into the square, as they were trying to disrupt the festivities and the military parade, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of independence. However, about 100 of protesters gathered in the square near the Arch of Triumph in front of the main rostrum. They were separated from the rostrum by the square of several hundreds of meters width. Standing in the square behind the Arch, protesters were chanting: “Shame!”, “Down with the authorities!”, “Traitors!”
