IGOR DODON MONITORS CONFERENCE ON MOLDOVA’S STATEHOOD

21 february, 2017

Moldovan President Igor Dodon is closely supervising the preparation for an international conference called “Moldova’s Statehood: Historic Continuity and Perspectives of Development”, which will be held in Chisinau on March 24-25 under the auspices of the head of state.

On Monday, President Dodon chaired a working meeting on the organization of the conference. Its participants will discuss the historic approach to the continuity of the Moldovan State, the country’s socio-economic development in various historic periods, the theory of the appearance of a state through the prism of the countries to be represented at the conference.

“We expect that the forum will gather experts – the representatives of the academia and university science, of the civil society and political parties from Moldova and foreign countries. By now, more than 100 researchers from Moldova along with experts from 11 countries (Italy, France, Germany, Romania, Ukraine, Russian Federation etc.) have already confirmed their participation in the conference”, Dodon wrote in social networks on Monday.

As already reported by Infotag, Igor Dodon won the presidential election last autumn under the slogans of strengthening the statehood and neutrality of Moldova, protection of Orthodox values and restoration of strategic partnership with the Russian Federation. In early February, Dodon announced an intention to institutionalize a new official holiday in Moldova – the Statehood Day. He proposed to celebrate the Day on February 2 – “the date symbolizing Moldova’s liberation from a foreign yoke, the date associated with the sovereignty and independence of the Principality of Moldova and consolidation of the national and state dignity of the people of Moldova”.

This stance is shared by the so-called Moldovenists [from the word ‘Moldoveni’, which means ‘Moldovans’, as opposed to ‘Romanianists’ – from the word ‘Romanians’], who are the main organizers of the March 24-25 conference. However, the Institute of History of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences stands on principally different positions concerning the history of the Moldovan State.
