SITUATION WITH HUMAN RIGHTS IN MOLDOVA WAS DIFFICULT IN 2016 – AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

23 february, 2017

Representatives of the human right organization Amnesty International presented the annual report “The State of Human Rights in the World, Region and in Moldova” at the Wednesday’s press conference, maintaining that the situation with human rights in Moldova was difficult in 2016.

Executive Director of the Amnesty International Moldova program Igor Stoica said that in 2016 a tough situation with human rights occurred and first of all this concerned the right to fair trial, freedom of expression and right to meetings.

“The complexity of the situation is clearly demonstrated by trials of ex-Prime Minister Vlad Filat and entrepreneur Veaceslav Platon. Court meetings are conducted in a closed form, despite the fact that these are very loud cases which should be conducted in an open regime”, the human right activist said.

According to him, the situation with Petrenco Group raises questions about the need to keep the defendants in remand, as their actions can hardly be regarded as a tough violation.

“It is absolutely unclear why they were kept in a cell, then transferred under house arrest, while later – under justice control”, Stoica wondered.

Amnesty International Executive Director in Moldova Cristina Pereteatku said that there is no freedom of expression in the Republic of Moldova, while the law on personal data protection allows authorities to hide behind it and is hindering journalists in doing their work.

“The European Convention on Human Rights says that elected representatives and officials are less protected from press, than simple citizens. Thus the law should not be applied for authority representatives”, she said.

As Infotag has already reported, the last year Amnesty International report was saying that the 2015 became the worst year in the sphere of human right protection for Moldova. However, the 2016 report says that a positive trend on combating tortures is registered in Moldova.
