​CHISINAU BOTANICAL GARDEN AND ZOO CLOSED FOR LIQUIDATING SNOW STORM CONSEQUENCES

The Chisinau Botanical garden and the city zoo were closed for liquidating the consequences of the natural disaster. The institution administration said they will be closed for at least 10 days.

“Due to the adopted measures, no animal suffered, though trees in the territory of the zoo were seriously affected. The fallen trees and branches should be removed. Also, it is necessary to repair several open-air cages, nets, sheds and decorative pillars, which were broken. Currently, volunteers are working in the zoo, helping employees to clean access ways to cages”, said Chisinau Zoo Director Dumitru Ciobanu.

Botanical Garden administration said that it prohibited access of visitors after the snowfalls affected more than 80% of trees and other plants.

“Most of plants and trees collections were destroyed and there is a risk that they will never be rehabilitated. In order to amend the situation, the Chisinau Botanical garden sent inquiries to equivalent institutions of other countries”, the message said.

On Tuesday, the Botanical garden was visited by Advisors to the Moldovan President. After that, Igor Dodon wrote on his page in social networks that more than 80% of gene pool of exotic trees and bushes were destroyed.

“In this connection, I ordered to urgently provide all necessary technical assistance. Besides, the Presidential administration will support the initiative of the city garden to address to profile academic centers in neighboring countries, as well as to our friend countries, especially the Russian Federation”, Dodon said.

At the same time, the city Dendrarium Park resumed its activities and is open for visitors, thought the works on liquidating the snow storm consequences continue there.
