HEALTH MINISTRY LAUNCHES ANTI-TOBACCO CAMPAIGN “MOLDOVA WITHOUT SMOKE”

On Thursday, the Health Ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior and the World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a campaign called “Moldova emerges from smoke. One year of successes and obstacles”.

The action is timed to the World No Tobacco Day, which will take place at the national level from May 25 to 31. Participants of the press conference, dedicated to this day, analyzed the achievements, pointing out that prohibition of smoking in public areas improves population’s health.

“The number of chronic patients, who need medical care in the national hospitals, has declined by about 10% after the smoking ban. The number of people suffering from coronary heart disease and chronic bronchitis has also decreased”, said Deputy Minister of Health, Aliona Serbulenco.

For the same period, police issued more than 7800 fines totaling 7.4 million lei.

According to the representative of the National Police Inspectorate of Chisinau, Marina Maxiana, more than 2 million lei has been collected from the amounts of fines for smoking in public places.

According to statistics, almost half of the adult population of Moldova smokes. Every second man and every eighth woman has a tobacco addiction. About 10% of children aged 13 and 15 also smoke. More than 60% of them die in working age.
