SEVERAL LYCEUM GRADUATES REFUSE TO RECEIVE DIPLOMAS FROM PRESIDENT

19 july, 2017

Several graduates from Moldovan lyceums have refused to accept presidential Diplomas of Honor, which President Igor Dodon handed in on Tuesday evening in Chisinau to the country’s best 100 graduates of 2017.

The first one to announce such a step was Mihaela Ungureanu from the Singerei Raion, who wrote in social networks that Dodon is “a person who hands in diplomas but takes away our [Romanian] identity. It’s a pity… I was invited to come, but I refused to… If all that had been organized by the Ministry of Education, it would be a totally different thing”.

After the news had been broadcast by several local television channels on Tuesday night, Political Adviser to the Head of State and Presidential Press Secretary Ion Ceban refuted the assertions that Mihaela had allegedly been on the list of the recipients of the presidential Diplomas of Honor. According to him, two other graduates from the Singerei Raion were selected for the ceremony – from among 600 lyceum students with high results.

Mihaela Ungureanu stated to TV8 channel that an officer from the presidential apparatus had phoned her about the diploma awarding, but she refused.

The TV channel made public the names of several more students who refused to accept the Diplomas.

One of them, Valeria Bratu from the Cahul Raion, stated: “I refused to accept such a diploma because it was offered to me by a president who does not represent me. He wages a vile, discriminatory policy towards his own people. It’s a pity that this initiative comes not from the Ministry of Education but from the president who is insisting on abolishing the baccalaureate exams. I don't wish to participate in the game, by which Dodon wants to grab a part of the graduates’ merits”.

As already reported by Infotag, President Igor Dodon has decided to establish a new cultural event in the republic – an annual festival for young graduates from Moldovan educational institutions. The head of state has called the festival “A Generation for the Future”, and the first such event was held in the Chisinau’s central square on Tuesday evening. President Dodon handed in the Diplomas of Honor to best lyceum graduates of the year, including from Gagauzia and Transnistria.

Dodon wrote on his Facebook page that he regards the festival as a sign of the State’s attention to, and encouragement of, young graduates – a stimulus for their new achievements.

Igor Dodon wrote he is considering the possibility of realization of a special presidential program aimed at creating a reserve of specialists for Moldovan state institutions and the national economy. In his words, he has reached a corresponding accord with the Russian Federation, and promised to publish the details of it in the nearest future.
