COURT APPROVES SIGNATURES IN SUPPORT OF CONDUCTING ANDI-CHIRTOACA REFERENDUM

24 july, 2017

The Buiucani office of the Court of Chisinau approved signatures, collected in support of conducting referendum on dismissing Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca. The court recognized as valid more than 75 thousand signatures out of the submitted 77 thousand. The necessary minimum was around 64 thousand signatures.

The adopted decision may be challenged during 15 days in the Appeals Chamber. According to the legislation, after receiving the court decision, the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) should appoint a date of conducting referendum. After this, the Central Election Commission will organize the very plebiscite.

To take the decision on dismissing Dorin Chirtoaca from the post by means of conducting referendum, this should be supported by more electors than the number of votes he got at local elections in June 2015 – more than 160 thousand votes.

Currently, Dorin Chirtoaca is staying under house arrest on corruption and abuse of power within the case on paid car parking lots in Chisinau. On Friday, the prosecutors addressed to the CMC with a demand to suspend Chirtoaca from duties. According to the legislation, if the Council takes such a decision, the referendum may not be conducted in the period of suspension from post.
