MOLDOVAN WOMEN – VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE DEMAND AUTHORITIES TO TAKE MEASURES

Moldovan women subjected to violence requested authorities to take measures to prevent violence in the country. They announced their request in the framework of social dialogue “You are not alone. Unite prevent violence against women”.

The forum was organized by the national coalition “Life without violence” on Tuesday. The dialogue participants required “approval of an action plan to prevent violence against women in Moldova in the first quarter of 2018.

The activists demanded the Government to introduce electives in gender equality education into the school program and financial assistance for victims of violence, as well as training of doctors, policemen, lawyers, social workers and psychologists who provide assistance in similar cases.

Minister of Health, Labor and Social Protection Stela Grigoras said that the strategy to combat violence against women in families has been elaborated in Moldova for the first time.

According to representative of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research, Rodica Josanu, today, the curriculum for the next school year for studying human rights in Moldovan schools is being modernized.

“Every person has the right to live without fear of violence. Violence is an expression of gender inequality; therefore, we must fight for increased women’s rights and empowerment”, said Ambassador of Sweden in Moldova Signe Burgstaller.

The dialogue was attended by 22 local and foreign organizations. The meeting was supported by the Government of Sweden within the 16-days campaign to prevent violence against girls and women, which has started on November 25. More than 70 events will be organized across the country.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, 6 Moldovan women out of 10 have experienced violence in family.
