"King Mihai was an outstanding statesman, an international-scale personality, who demonstrated fantastic courage in the hardest moment of Romania's history. King Mihai and the Royal House of Romania have always been and are remaining an example of unity for the whole Romanian people, an example of loyalty, fortitude, dignity and magnanimity for all Romanians", Speaker Candu wrote in his telegram.

"King Mihai will remain in our memory as a symbol of stoicism, a specimen of nobility, dignity and modesty. Today, not only Romania but whole Europe have lost a great personality. I send compassion and regret to the Royal Family and to the whole Romanian people", wrote Premier Pavel Filip.

His Majesty King Mihai the First passed away on Tuesday afternoon in a private residence in Switzerland. He will be buried in Romania.
