EX-MP IURIE BOLBOCEANU SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS FOR TREASON

Former parliament deputy Iurie Bolboceanu was sentenced to 14 years on accusation of high treason and espionage for Russia, said the press service of the Moldovan Prosecutor General’s Office.

“According to the decision of the Court of Chisinau, ex-MP Iurie Bolboceanu is declared guilty of committing crime on the article “High Treason” and sentenced to 14 years in closed prison with deprivation of the right to occupy state posts for a period of 4 years”, the message says.

According to the message, the sentence is not final, it may be challenged in the Appeals Chamber.

Iurie Bolboceanu was arrested on March 17, 2017, so the term of his arrest was expiring. According to the Moldovan legislation, if the suspect is not sentenced within 12 months since the moment of arrest, he has to be released.

As Infotag has already reported, Bolboceanu was accused that being recruited by officers of the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), in the period of October 5, 2016 through March 17, 2017 he collected and transmitted information of national interest, which may have been used against the Republic of Moldova interests. The GPO press release says that the former MP was being paid for his services.

The criminal persecution was conducted by the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases together with the Information and Security Service. Iurie Bolboceanu was MP in 2001-2005 and 2010-2014.
