UKRAINE WILL NOT DO HARM TO THE DNIESTER RIVER – PREMIER FILIP

13 april, 2018

Prime Minister Pavel Filip summarized the results of his two-day visit to Kiev at the Friday’s Government sitting.

According to him, besides the discussion of the law on joint control of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border and signing bilateral documents, an important topic of discussion was the preservation and development of the Dniester River ecosystem.

“We did not talk about this publicly, but this topic is central at our meetings with Ukrainian colleagues for already 2.5 years”, Filip said.

He said that the Government approved the membership of the Moldovan Commission for sustainable using and protection of the Dniester River, just as Ukraine has done.

“This commission is very important and was created on the basis of mutual agreements. It is about the ratifying by Ukraine of the 2012 Rome Agreement on the basis of which the commission was created. It is empowered to conduct monitoring and control of what is happening on the Dniester River”, he said.

Filip said that due to the ratification of the Rome agreement, the building of six hydropower stations on the Dniester River is impossible without the preliminary assessment of consequences and without Moldova’s consent.

“We are paying a great attention to this issue and the Ukrainian side assured us that it is not going to do anything that may harm the Dniester ecosystem. This is a common treasure, it is the main source of water supply not only for Chisinau, but also for Odessa, thus we have to ensure our descendants with clean water”, the Prime Minister concluded.
