PARLIAMENT STATES GROWTH OF SUICIDE ATTEMPTS

The number of Moldova citizens who have attempted to committee suicide is growing. This information was reported by theВ PartyВ ofВ SocialistsВ (PSRM) deputy Vladimir Odnostalco, who presented a report made by a special commission on the development of the legislative amendments to combat suicide.

According to him, in 2015, 697 people, including 103 juveniles attempted to committee suicide, while in 2016, this number increased to 815, including132 children.

According to the report, in 2016, 384 adults attempted to hang themselves, 170 - inflicted fatal damage, 31 - attempted to drawn, and another 205 - used other methods to pass away. Children chose another ways to die: 78 - used pills, 35 - physical damage, 12 - fell from a height, 4 - used toxic substances, and one juvenile attempted to drown.

The MP stated that most of the attempts have been made by children aged 13-16 years, but recently the problem of suicide among people over 70 years appeared.

"The reasons why children commit suicide include: conflict with parents or with other family members, frequent change of stepfather or stepmother, school congestion, lack of parental attention to children. The latter is a complex problem for Moldova, when many parents leave the country, and children stay with their grandmothers. About 65% of suicides are caused by the family factor", he said.

The Socialist noted that according to the research results of the World Health Organization, 3% of university students aged 19-24 years attempted to commit suicide.

"Most suicides are committed by residents of rural areas, because life is much more difficult there and all the factors are accumulated in this area, which gives such a sad result", the Deputy said.

According to him, to solve the suicide problem, the government needs to take measures, especially training of specialists who could provide psychological support to people at risk. It is also important to combat Internet sites that promote suicide among adolescents.
